Mystery of Mt Raung : The Social Mythology

Posted by : Harmawan's Site |

The eeriness of Mt Raung has been shown from the climbing post name, like “Pondok Sumur” ( Lodge of Well), “Pondok Demit” (Lodge of Ghost) , “Pondok Mayit” (Lodge of Dying Body) and “Pondok Angin” (Lodge of Wind). The name of all lodge above have history that trusted by society who lives around there

Lodge of Well
Many old people say that there’s a well which be used by “The Sacred Hermit” from Gresik. Also they believe that the sacred hermit is still alive but invisible by human eyes. Here, when you are willing to overnight by tent, at night, you may hear the mysterious sound. What’s that ? You will hear the “horse’s trot” in the back of your tent, but invisible, just sound. When you try to look at that, you will not find it. The horse’s trot is like from Java’s kingdom period who lives a few hundreds ago

Lodge of Ghost
Believed by society, this place is the gost market to do their activity. Many people believe that they (ghost) have a special day which it will be heard “a crowded market” here, also the mistic song.
This location is located in the east of climbing route, exactly, in the small valley that filled by a large underbrush area and clumps

Lodge of Dying Body
From the name, we may know that this place is haunter than other transit places. When we was under Dutch Colonial territory, a dying body was found “hang on” a tree. The dying body was a Dutch Noble that be killed by Javanesse

Lodge of Wind
After Lodge of Dying Body, we will see the end of lodge before in the peak of Mt Raung, this is Lodge of Wind. When you all here, you will be shown by very exiting scenery, it’s caused the location in the top of a hill, thus we can see around, mountain scenery, Bondowoso city at the night, and other places that you would like to see. Nevertheless, you must be carefull here because the big wind. Therefore, this mountain is named by “Gunung Raung”, it’s meant that big wind is always heard “roar” in your ear.
Just info, Raung in English Language is meant “roar”. Once again, in this area you must be much carefull because when you are careless, the wind can make you get accident, you may fall to steep valley

The Social Mythology

According to the social mythology, the steep valley that placed in the west is the Macan Putih (White Lion) Kingdom, “The Throne of Pangeran Tawangulun (the prince)”. Here, it is often to be heard by the horse’s trot and “Kereta Kencana” (queen mystic train that pull by horse). Many people believe, this place is a entrance gate to “this mystic kingdom”

Many people also believe, the hill in around of Raung’s Caldera is the right “Macan Putih Kingdom”. This mystic kingdom was built when Mt Raung erupted for the first time in 1638, with Pangeran Tawangulun as the king. He was a son of Majapahit Prince that lost when this prince meditated here. The Macan Putih kingdom existence has right connection with people ritual. For example (you may believe or not) : when there’s a wedding party in “Macan Putih Kingdom”, it’ll be many animal in the village died. According to the social mythology, that animals become to be “upeti” (presenting) to the king
In “Jumat Kliwon” (ancient Friday in javanesse calendar), many people believe this mystic kingdom will be appear again to the real world and after, this kingdom, king and his people will be disappear again and come into the “mystic world”. This moment is known by “Mukso” (disappear)

Pangeran Tawangulun, according to this mhytology is a one of husbands from Nyai Roro Kidul (queen of South Sea, the other Javanesse’s mhytology). Every Friday, Nyai Roro Kidul will visit to Pangeran Tawangulun kingdom and usually, it will be heard the very mystic sound and sacred. This sound is from the horse’s trot that bring the south sea queen until she meets her husband. If you hear this sound, it’s better you don’t’ hear pretendly.

This is good advice from the many people. If you hear this sound well, you will be in the accident. This mystic sound can bring you to their world and finally, you will die and your soul life in the Macan Putih mystic kingdom and being a slave. Do you want it ? I don’t think so…….

Our advice, as long as you are in the foreign area, you must obey everything. Java island is known as mystic island with many social mythology who believed by the society. The Tengger and Raung Mythology is only a few of several mythology that lives in Java Land

The easiest way :

you may climb from Bondowoso district straight to Sumber Wringin village through Sukasari sub district by truck. From here, you will through “Pines Garden” and coffee plantation area to Pondok Motor. If you arrive here at night, you may overnight in the camp area. It caused that trip to the peak need time for about 9 hours

From Pondok Motor, you walk again through a large garden in a hour then we entry the challenge forest. Why ? You have to know that when you begin to this forest, you will find climb route with angle in about 20 degrees

After 2 hours you walk here or about 1300 to 1400 m, we will find “the curved and up – down way”. It’s happened until elevation in 1500 – 1600 m above sea level. When you are here, you will see the “cemara (casuarina) tree” and you may continue to “Pondok Sumur”. It’s located in 1750 m above sea level which climb will be difficult and steep climbing. We continue to climb in 8 hours again to forest border and its called by “Pondok Mantri” or many local people say this location as “Parasan” in elevation about 2900 – 3000 m above sea level. You may spend your time here with “camping”.

This camping area is the nearest to peak of Mt Raung where need to climb in about 2 hours to arrive there. We climb there with challange road again where sandy route and stones will receive you in elevation about 3.332 m above sea level

Now, you are in the peak of Mt Raung. It’s very amazing scenery from here where you may look at around of you clearly and Raung’s crater in the center of this peak. To reach this crater, you must climb to down and no good route to be there. It’s only one way but very difficult and danger. You must be experience in climbing and expert, but if you ere otherwise, we give you advice that “better you don’t continue this challenge”. High risk……

When you are will to climb to down, you must prepair your climbing tools as best as you can, also rescue tools. It’s high risk, so you must concentrate, focus and guided by local experience guiding. This man knows well to reach the crater

Posted by : Harmawan's Site |

Three back part of mountain and mountainous which confine the south of Probolinggo are Tengger mountainous with Bromo, Mt Lamongan and Yang upland. They are not only beautiful scenery but also as Yang upland preservation
The hills have power of attraction and unique. These make the researcher and nature concern group from many collages in Indonesia want to climb the peak of Argopuro. A difficult area with very step high side and sloping valley, nature mantraps are in the way (there is nature mantrap along the way). Those are challenge to get a deep impression.
Arriving in Bremi will be looked Yang upland. In the morning, there are thousands of honey bee. They fly around the white coffee’s flower which is stretched out in ascent’s gate Ayerdingin. Shaking of resin forest calls us to enter it. If you are bored, you can look a large lake in “Taman Hidup”. Here, you can take a rest on tent
From “Taman Hidup (the Live Garden)” to Cicentor, you have to follow the way and find a little river which is called by “Aeng Kenek (the Small River)”. At Cicentor, there is a place for making a tent. It’s also as the second place for taking a rest after “Taman Hidup”
From Cicentor, the next place is the Argopuro’s Peak. It’s very interesting place, because the one way to go to Edelweis Park. It’s very large and beautiful. Edelweis is a strange flower and it will never die for many years. Ancient Javanesse call it as “Tan – Alayu” flower. Also it’s known as “Eternal Flower (Anaphalis Javanica)”
Before arriving at Peak of Mt Argopuro, we will find the wilderness. It’s very dangerous because there are many natural mantraps. They can be little visible stools (trees). It’s known as a person tree or sting leaves. Stem, stalk, and the surface of leaves full of thorns. If they touch people skin, it will cause itch, pain and also hot. It likes the person which caused by honey bee, centipede or poison species of scorpion. But sometimes that poisonous can cure the diseases, such as reumathic. Because of that, in this area there are no animals or wild animals like snake, antipode and so on
The cold wind blows friendly to the climber of Argopuro Peak (3.088 metres). Each climber must admire it. Due to the Argopuro is the tallest hill which is near by the Yang upland. Eventhough, it has been many centuries, it never care but it still shows the ex-main building, a deepen foundation that being room border, entrance & connector door, praying place (the “Pura”) and main portal. It’s pity, up to now we can’t find a charter or evidence that shows the year numeration, so that the ruins of palace which is used as a place for taking a rest of beautiful queen, it’s named “Dewi Rengganis” still become a mysterious one
You will be lazy to go from this beautiful place. But there are many interesting places that need to be visited. After from the Argopuro Peak or “Rengganis Palace”, you come back to “Cicentor” and continuing of your traveling to “Si Kasur”. Going around the “Batu Lempeng” hill, going down to the “Pondok Celot At Si Kasur, there are two of bungalow. There are only for foundation and half of stone wall. But they stand firmly. An ex-building from Mr Ladebour, the lord when the Dutch’s colonialist command in Indonesia, there is foundation for plane. In the map of “Yang Upland”, this location is called by “Alun – Alun Besar (Big Square)”. It’s not far away from this building and now called by “Cemara Satu”, there is a water source and called by “Sungai Kolbu (Kolbu River)”. A fresh vegetables is provided for everyone who camp at Si Kasur
From Si Kasur, we must down a valley, named is “Jurang Dalam”, then through “Jambangan” and going around the “Cemara Dua” hill. Walking to “Alun – Alun Kecil (A small square)” and we arrive at “Cemara Panjang” hill. Here, you will find a water source. If you want to continue your way, you will find a cross road. There is a sign and warning board. After traveling from “Pondok Lalang”, “Taman Sari” and “Batu Lawang”, the climb route of Argopuro / Rengganis Peak is over at exitgate named “Baderan”

Posted by : Harmawan's Site |

Preview

Tenggerese is the native ethnic who lives in Bromo and around

Having found a “Tengger” charter in 851 saka (years in 929) and “Penanjakan” charter in 1324 saka (years in 1402) is known that a “Wandalit” village in the Tengger mountainous, there is “Hulun Hyang” (God men = people who have strong religion), they are called by “Hila – hila”, it’s meant “Holy”. Due to, Tengger is free from Majapahit tax. It’s a special place since ancient kingdom period in Java land

The Tenggerese society is obeclient to God, have history relation with Majapahit. A king gives special attention to that people. So, it’s difference from Hindu follower in Tengger and in Bali

According to etimology, “Tengger” means stand (without moving) and filosofically “Tengger” means “signing a good manner”. It can be proved by Tengger society that they live full of peace full, safe, there is no thief or criminal. In mitos, Tenggerese is known coming from the word Teng (the last part of Rara Anteng’s name) and Ger (the last part of Jaka Seger’s name). They are a couple married who are the beginning of Tengger society

The Tenggerese Religion

Hindu in Tengger and Bali are different. In Tengger, there is no Kasta, people believe that their God (named “Sang Hyang Maha Agung”) is a leader in the universe. They believe something hidden and nature phenomenas such as sun eclipse, moon eclipse and earth quake. They still believe dynamism, fithesisme and believe to “Bhatara – bhatara (servant for the God)”.

It’s like Bhatara Krisna who will protects the people, Bhatara Iswara with the white symbol keep the east. Bhatara Brahma with red symbol keep the south, Bharata Wisnu with the black symbol keep the north, Bhatara Maha Dewa with the yellow symbol keep the west. Batara Guru’s symbol is five colours to keep the middle. Tenggerese pray in the morning, afternoon and evening

After the government confirms that Tenggerese who is Hindu Dharma, is built the Pura, places for praying. Their attitude is based on “Karma Phala”, it’s means that the result of the action. They believe tat good action (called by “cubhakarma”) will get a good resul and bad action (called by “acubhakarma) will get a bad result. Karma Phala become a motivator to do a good action. They are honest, simple and respective. They never lock their door in the evening and there is no thief here. It’s caused they believe the Karma Phala. They keep it in traditionally in the outside of the house without guard

The groups of Tengger society is lead by “Medicine Man”, in Tengger is called by “Dukun” who has a duty and responsibility in leading the ceremony and praying
He is helped by others, they are :
1. The Old Men (called by “Wong Sepuh”), his duty is to help the medicine man to prepare “the present”, here is called by “Sesaji” in dead ceremony
2. The Wedding Helper (called by “Legen”), his duty is to help the medicine man to prepare the equipment and “sesaji” in wedding ceremony
3. The Circumcise Doctor (called by “Dukun Sunat”), his duty is to circumcise the son (nearly adult). But it’s different from Islam, cirumucing in Tengger just cut a little
4. The Baby Nurse (called by “Dukun Bayi”), his / her duty is to help a mother who will get birth

Medicine man here is very important in Tengger, so every village has medicine man. He’s choosen by people with the condition :
1. Married man
2. The son of medicine man
3. Mastering the charms

To exam the medicine man to be is done in Poten, the place where Yadnya ceremony is done. This examination is done at Kasada ceremony

They know “semedi” (pray ritual), “ngebleng fasting” (not eat and drink at all), “mutih fasting” (only eat rice and water), it’s all depent on sun calculation and called by candrasengkala

They use Caka Year where for one year is consist of 354 days. It’s divided into 12 months : Kasa Month, Karo Month, Katiga Month, Kapat Month, Kalima Month, Kanem Month, Kapitu Month, Kawolu Month (26 days), Kasanga Month, Kasepuluh Month, Desta Month and Kasada Month.
